Kimberly-Clark and Flexidao Optimize PPA Management
Background & Goal
Kimberly-Clark (NYSE: KMB) is a global manufacturer of personal care and hygiene products, including trusted brands such as Huggies, Kleenex, Andrex, Pull-Ups, Scott, Kotex, and WypAll.
To support corporate sustainability targets, the team needed greater control over a Power Purchase Agreement in Scotland, United Kingdom, and end-to-end lifecycle management for REGOs, the UK’s energy attribute certificates. The goal was a single, trusted system that connects financials, generation, and certificates to simplify reporting and strengthen governance.
The Challenge
To validate that the PPA was performing as contracted, Kimberly-Clark needed transparent, repeatable verification of financial and operational outcomes, plus a clean chain of custody for REGOs used in environmental reporting. The team was tasked to:
- Verify that invoiced amounts align with actual delivered energy
- Monitor financial performance accurately, historically and forward-looking
- Confirm production volumes and validate turbine outage reasons against availability guarantees
- Maintain end-to-end REGO management with a transparent audit trail and complete documentation
The Solution
Flexidao deployed an automation-first data platform that centralizes metering, contract, operations, and certificate data for the PPA. The solution delivers continuous updates, portfolio-to-asset drill-downs, and controls that reduce manual reconciliation while making reporting straightforward and defensible.
What the team gets:
- Automated data collection: Regular ingestion and normalization of financial, volumetric, and carbon KPIs
- Financial analytics: Historical and projected PPA performance to explain variances and outcomes
- Operational oversight: Turbine downtime tracking against availability guarantees and contract clauses
- Certificate lifecycle control: Ongoing status and balances for the REGO portfolio, with a full history and linked official documents
REGO lifecycle handled:
- Cancel certificates on Kimberly-Clark’s behalf
- Standardize and store certificates in the platform
- Track delivery against contracted volumes
- Streamline reporting and flag certificate shortfalls so suppliers can be informed
Results
Kimberly-Clark now operates a proactive control loop for its Scotland PPA, with clear alignment between invoices and the energy received. The platform improves contract performance oversight, strengthens certificate governance, and reduces manual effort across finance, sustainability, and procurement.
- PPA transparency: Faster reconciliation of invoiced amounts to actual production and delivery
- Operational confidence: Documented outage reasons and availability compliance
- Certificate assurance: Accurate REGO balances, clean audit trail, and timely cancellations
- Carbon reporting readiness: Datasets support hourly matching of renewable generation to consumption for precise carbon-free energy reporting
